    The 24th Infantry Division was an infantry division of the United States Army that was inactivated in October 1996.
    Commanders: Maj. Gen. A. C. Smith (January 1948 to present). The 24th Infantry Division was among the first to see combat in World War II and among the last to stop fighting. The Division was on Oahu, with Headquarters at Schofield Barracks, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, 7 December 1941, and suffered minor casualties.
    The 24th ID was inactivated and reflagged to become the 3rd Infantry Division as part of the Army's reduction to a ten-division force April 26, 1996. During this ceremony, Veterans of the historic 24th ID, known as the Victory Division, came together to celebrate their division’s illustrious history and talk about its legacy.
    The 24th Infantry Division’s heavy armor moved rapidly northward, meeting sporadic resistance from demoralized Iraqi troops. Linking up with the 101st battle positions, the 24th Division moved the 200 miles north to the Euphrates River Valley by noon on the twenty-sixth, blocking a major Iraqi supply route and possible avenue of retreat.
